          Description

          This is also known as Strawberry cactus or strawberry hedgehog cactus and has cylindrical stems, forming dense or lax clumps either loose decumbent or erect, with 20-100 branches usually before flowering. The stems are a pale to bright green and get to be up to 3.3 feet long and 5.6 inches in diameter. Radial spines are needle like, slightly curved and brownish and up to 1.5 feet long. Central spines are slightly curved, white, tan brown or grey and often nearly black. These can be up to 3ft long. The flowers are funnel-shaped, purple-red to pink in varying shades with deep reddish throat and up to 4.4inches in diameter. The flowers bloom in early spring during mid-morning.
